24 days to go - crewing

Today I mostly spent talking to people about the film. We were meeting a variety of people for different roles on the film and spent most of the day sat in the cafe area of the Curzon cinema in Soho doing this.

The most interesting observation of today as a director is having the ability to communicate your ideas to a wide variety of people. There are some who show up, you mention a film that you think puts the story in context for them and they get it straight away. They have read the script as well so they put these two things together and the conversation automatically jumps to another level where you are discussing particular scenes they liked or didn't fully understand. I really like these conversations as it helps me question the point and if I can explain everything at that point then I know that we are heading in the right direction.

The thing that I haven't mastered entirely yet is when someone says to me "what is the film about?". I know that I should be able to sum this up easily within a sentence but I always find myself still talking about five minutes later not having any idea that I am doing a good job of explaining things. I wrote the following in an email the other day to someone that we are trying to get on board for the film and I think this sums it up quite well.

"Booked Out is a character based comedy where a unique set of quirky individuals find solace, hope and love for who they are. I see it as a British take on American indie films (such as Ghost World, Rushmore and Juno) which I haven't seen done in the UK before."

If I can get that memorised then I think the majority of people will know what I am talking about. My hardest part is someone who hasn't read the script and when you tell them that wants to hear more, and more and more. In my head I am saying to myself "just read the script" or "I can send you the synopsis" as it speaks for itself but I know this is a vital ingredient that I need to learn and I am getting better all the time but my waffle ratio is still way to high.
